Default Rods nocking in ATV?

Okay. I have a question. My grandpa has a ATV, He bought it reasonable from the guy cause the guy thought it had a rod nocking. Anyways what had happened is the guy was out on a trail with it and it made a screaching sound so he drove it home and found out it had no oil. Bone dry. When he started it back up the next day it has a clicking sound like a lifter not a nocking sound.
I dont think it has a nocking rod. I think its something else. Someone told me after looking and listening to it, that it was the chain clinking.
But someone told they it had globe i, (not sure how its spelled) I geuss where you put oil in if you open it while its running there smoke that comes out of it. But it doesnt come out of the tail pipe. I think the rings are bad. Does this sound like a rod nocking? or what? i want to make him a deal on it but not if i have to replace the motor.
Kawasaki bayou 220, straight gas.
It doesnt screach and rides fine with oil. It has that lifter sound and the glowbi. I want to purchase it but dont want to get into replacing the motor. Is whatever you mentioned a easy fix?
