Default Why is my 4 wheeler gear shifter stuck?

My '96 Yamaha 4 Wheeler is not changing gears. It's stuck on neutral and won't move or change to any other gears. If you know anything please answer.

My friend has a 4 wheeler and i just got finished working on it ,i had to replace the fuel lines and clean the carb , but when he came to pick it up it wouldn't go into gear , he said that it happens all of the timeand that you have to rock it to get it to go into gear. Also there a lever on the side of the transmission just above the gear shift that you have to make sure thats in gear His had a red rubber on top of it , just remember if it's not in gear it wont let you shift the shifter

Is it an automatic or a stick shift. If its a manual trans, 1st check the clutch master cylinder which is located next to the brake master cylinder. it is usually made of plastic with a black cap and is smaller than the brake master cylinder. if you open the cap and there is no brake fluid in it, it means that either ther slave cylinder is leaking or the clutch is on its last leg. check the slave cylinder first, its about $5.00 to rebuild but it has to be bled just like a wheel cylinder when you replace or rebuild them. if its a clutch expect to fork out between $600-$800 price range
