Default Gas in exhaust On my motorcycle?

I have a 1981 Yamaha xj650 maxma that my fiance got me for my birthday and its been sitting for about a year. Well i got it running but noticed gas coming from the exhaust. Cylinder 2 wasn't firing and was fouling out so I replaced all the spark plugs. I haven't tried starting again because I'm wait for the gas to evaporate. Do you think the spark plug helped or could there be other things wrong with the bike. I'm new to bike repair so any help would be greatly appreciate.
