You need both a provisional licence and a CBT to ride a 50cc machine on L plates on the road at 16 (this must be restricted to 30mph), at 17 you can ride a machine of up to 125cc with a maximum power output of 12.2bhp (again with L plates) - the CBT certificate (DL196) is valid for 2 years.

yes you need both before you ride a 50cc scooter. to ride a scooter without the cbt would be really daft - you will learn how to be safe on the road and it could save your life. you dont need a scooter, the people conducting the cbt will provide one if you dont have one, they will also provide helmet, gloves and jacket - just let them know what you need and most training centres will help you out. Good luck mate - its great fun and you learn loads !!!
