my old old yamaha is having problems kickstarting.?

i just recently bought this old yamaha from a old friend. its kinda a peicer and needs work. when i go to kick start it its a big pain. half the time i can kickstart it but the other half the time it wont even grab anything to kickstart. starting it is just fine like the plugs goo, gas line good. but the kickstart ****s! can u help?

Make sure the kickstart lever is grabbing the splined shaft, If it is, youre probably going to have to replace the kickstart mechanism inside the transmission, Or you could bump start it.....
