Scooter only kick starts -- need new battery? ?

OK, so I just got a scooter from a friend, and he has been driving it for just over a year. He got it from his father-in-law and got it running again, but it can only start with a kick-start. I want to be able to just use the ignition, because obviously kick-starting is kind of a pain, especially since you have to put it up on a support and it weighs a lot. My question is, do I need to get a new battery for the electrical stuff to work again? Or can I just get a charger for the current battery? I will get the make and model in a bit, if needed. Thanks.

well what i would do is try and charge the battery and if it wont charge then you need a new battery but it could also be something in the wiring like a short hope it helps
