Im looking to get a motorcycle or the first time ever and was wondering what I should get and need to do?

I have decided I want to spend about £1000 in total and that's about it I only want something like a 125cc and don't want anything too quick I was thinking should I buy new or used and what should I look for? Also legally what do I need to do to be legal on the road and what tests do I need to take, I understand I can only have my 125cc for 2 years can someone please explain this?
