charging system on 06 XL883L Sportster?

My check engine light has come on[several times]. I took it to the shop and now they are saying I have a problem with my battery, stator, and maybe my regulator. I just bought the motocycle, it has set up for 2 yrs. It starts just fine and after I had the 1000 mile checkup it runs great. Except the check engine light. I am new to riding and really enjoy it. I bought me a repair manual. any suggestions. I hate paying for labor cost. i just spent over 500 and now they want to charge me another 600. I have friends who will help me with the mechanical work. I am a little mechanicaly inclined myself.

dissconnect the battery for about 15 min should go off.
