Buying used sport bike, which is the better choice?

All I can afford is early 90's bikes from independent buyers, often with something that needs to be fixed. The main choices are, 93 FZR 600 (needs ignitor and key cylinder), 92 Katana (blinkers and horn not working). 89 katana, and possibly an 02 katana (needs front tire).

If anyone can offer advice on newer vs older bikes and suzuki vs yamaha. I will be using it for commuting and travel.
