24 year old thinking of getting a motorcycle and class M etc...?

Ok I am a 24 yr old male who is considering riding a motorcycle and getting a class M license BUT am afraid of killing myself or injuring someone else ** accident. Is it easy? Is it hard? I haven't been thru a driving test since I was 16 for my drivers license and had failed the first time. I got this idea because after seeing gas prices rise, seeing others around me riding and enjoying themselves and now my dad who is in his 50's has a scooter in which I rode for first time ever and have a few other times since but still am a little shaky with. I just want to make sure I can do it without killing myself or someone else and that I can pass the test in flying colors. Ive heard allot of people dying on motorcycles and having injuries, its pretty much freaks me out...one more thing how do i take safety courses and get the class M without a motorcycle and what should I chose for a first timer? My dad is also considering upgrading from his scooter to a cycle also ** the way, so any suggestions?
