Default Obtaining a motorcycle permit?

I am a male of 17 years old in New York. I have decided to ignore the vehicle permit, I do however want to get my Motorcycle Permit soon. If I understand correctly I can just go to the DMV, pay $10 and take the test? I also would be the only one in my family to get a motorcycle, so I'd be the one paying any fees. Besides the bike itself, do I have to pay for anything else?? Thanks for the help guys, I'm a total motorbike novice, but I'm gonna pick up some reading material and get right into the bike world! lol

You need insurance if you are planning on riding on the road. As you are a young male it could be quite high depending on the type of bike you choose. ** taking a motorcycle safety course it should lower the amount of money you have to pay for insurance. Drive safe and enjoy yourself.
