My 1985 Kawasaki Jet Ski stalls out of water without throttle. What do I do?

I didn't give it a try yet in water yet. Actually, it was a pain to get started. Finally when it did a thick and black grease came out of the exhaust. Now, it has the above problem. Please help!! Is this a simple out of the water issue? Or do I need to adjust something in the engine?
