I have a 1993 ski-doo mxz......?

I need help figuring out what is wrong with it.It will start but it will die as soon as Iet off the throttle, it runs as if it was running out of gas, and it runs very ruff and makes a baffling sound out of the exhaust.Somebody told me to clean the carbs and somebody else told me to flush the gas out of it,but I wanted to know what else it could or might be so I can start the process of elimintion.I do not want to take it to a shop because it costs to much and is funner to fix myself.
