South Lake tahoe transportation...snowmobiling?

I am moving out to SLT next may and I am curious about transportation out there. I am not sure if i am going to be able to afford a car, so I can get a cheap motorcycle for the summer. but in the winter is it possible to use a snowmobile as transportation? I live out east now so i don't know much about ski towns or places with a lot of snow. I feel as if they would create roads for snowmobiles lol thanks
